Quartz Countertop Maintenance

Quartz is hard to beat if you want a low-maintenance surface for your countertops. Because quartz is basically non-porous, its cleaning and maintenance is quick and painless. Unlike natural stone, it never needs to be sealed either. Still, quartz countertops can always benefit from a regular cleaning and maintenance routine.

Routine Care

Unseen dirt and other elements are the number one enemy for quartz. Regular cleaning with a damp cloth and mild detergent is all you need to keep your quartz surface looking great. Just be sure to wipe up spills as they happen and remove any hardened food or liquid with anything that won’t scratch the surface. Don’t wait for spills to dry out because it would harden the liquid and make the surface sticky, which requires a bit more effort on your part to clean up.

Stains & Spills

Even though liquid spills will not permanently stain your quartz counters, you still need to wipe any fresh spillage immediately using a soft cloth and mild detergent. Sometimes, of course, the dreaded occurs and big spills suddenly turn your countertop into a stained mess. If you have quartz-specific cleaning products, just spray the product on the stain, let sit for a few minutes, and wipe with a wet cloth to remove. Some other great alternatives are: mild glass cleaners like Windex or rubbing alcohol followed by warm water.

Products to Avoid

Maintaining quartz is as much about avoiding the wrong products as it is about cleaning stains. When choosing a cleaning product for your quartz counters, always check the label for information on safety and protection. Ammonia, lemon, bleach, nail polish remover, and turpentine should always be avoided on quartz countertops. The harshness of these substances can cause the bonds between the quartz and resin to disintegrate and eventually damage the surface. Although vinegar is sometimes recommended for cleaning, we also advise against using vinegar on your quartz counters, as you can risk discoloring the surface.
